Every year in November, the Money & Pensions Service leads Talk Money Week — a national campaign to encourage people across the UK to open up about their finances. The aim is simple but powerful: to make talking about money as normal as talking about our health, relationships, or everyday life. It’s a week focused on starting a conversation about money, whether that’s checking in on your budget, asking for help with benefits, or opening up about money stress. The campaign encourages everyone, whether that’s individuals, families, community groups or organisations, to take small steps toward more open financial conversations.
Why is Talk Money Week Important?
Evidence shows that people who talk more about money:
- make better, less risky financial decisions
- feel less anxious and more in control
- strengthen their relationships (by sharing goals, pressures, and solutions)
- help future generations develop healthier money habits.
Talking about money is the first step to understanding, being resilient, and accepting support.
What does it mean for CCHA tenants?
We know that many of our tenants are juggling rising bills, shrinking budgets, and anxiety about what comes next. Feelings of shame, embarrassment, or fear about admitting some of those pressures can create silence, and silence often hides the path to help. Financial struggles are real, and you’re not alone, especially in today’s cost-of-living environment. Starting a conversation about money can help.
- You might discover benefit entitlements you didn’t know about
- You might spot a budgeting tweak that makes a real difference
- You might just feel lighter, knowing you’re not facing things alone
Over the last year, we have been able to support tenants in a lot of different ways by talking to them about their money worries. Here’s how we helped:
- Issued 184 fuel bank vouchers
- Issued 286 food bank vouchers
- Issued a total of £895.60 in shopping vouchers through Prezzee to support our tenants
- Used a total of £5,987.00 to support our tenants and their families through our own Tenant Hardship Fund.
- Sent basic hygiene and winter warmer packs to tenants or to support our colleagues who may be struggling
We understand that money worries can affect every part of your life — your wellbeing, your home, your stress levels. That’s why we offer support, guidance, and a listening ear. Our Cost of Living Hub is a starting point for local advice and support on energy bills, benefits, debt, and more. We also have a dedicated team of Money Solutions Officers available to help you with basic budgeting, arrears, benefit checks, referrals to trusted debt support agencies or just someone to talk to about your situation. You can find your local Money Support Officer by entering the first line of your address or postcode via our Find Your Money Officer page.
If you’re having trouble paying rent, please reach out as early as possible so that we can work together to find a solution
How to “Start the Conversation” this week
- Tell a friend or family member that you’re feeling squeezed and ask if they’ve ever felt the same, you might be surprised how much that helps.
- Use a free budgeting tool, check you’re claiming all the benefits you’re entitled to, or chat with your Money Support Officer. Here are some great budgeting tools:
- If you’re in a shared household, talk with flatmates or adult children who are working, about splitting bills fairly or pooling resources.
- Speak to Cardiff Money Advice for support on any financial struggles you might be facing, or attend one of their drop in centres for face to face support.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I don’t know where to start,” that’s perfectly okay. Conversations don’t have to be perfect, what matters is that they begin. We’re here to help, one conversation at a time.
