In our ongoing mission to address homelessness and provide much-needed housing in Cardiff, we’re excited to share the projects funded by TACP (Transactional Accommodation Capital Programme).

This financial year, we have secured £12.2 million of TACP funding through Welsh Government, which will allow us to buy 50 homes off the open market, across Cardiff. These homes are a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, to accommodate families and individuals with different needs.

Once bought, each home has refurbishments carried out by Davies Contractors to meet Welsh Housing Quality Standards (WHQS), and tenants are living in their new homes within an average of two weeks from the date of purchase.

This funding covers 70% of the cost of acquisition and refurbishment, with the remaining cost covered by CCHA, to deliver high-quality living spaces for those in need.

In line with funding requirements, the first priority for these homes is given to individuals and families currently living in temporary accommodation, and then to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, ensuring that housing is directed towards those facing the most urgent challenges.

Clare, 43, had been living in temporary accommodation with her two children for 18 months, before being contacted by CCHA with the offer of a permanent home:

“Last year, my circumstances changed when I left an abusive relationship and then lost my job of 25 years following long term illness. For the first time, I found myself without a roof over my head, and I returned to live with my parents. The situation wasn’t ideal, with two kids to think of too, so I phoned Cardiff Council for support. They initially housed us in a hotel for four months, before moving us to a flat and then to a bungalow.

During this time, I was also undergoing surgery for a brain injury, so when I had a call from CCHA in October to say they might have a permanent home for me, it felt like my luck was finally starting to change. By the end of November, we had moved into our new home.

My neighbourhood manager at CCHA, Levi, has been amazing. He has kept me updated throughout the whole process, supporting me through the move and helping me get access to different types of support.

For the first time in a long time, we have some stability back in our lives, and we have a safe and permanent home just in time to celebrate Christmas.”
