Smart meters are the next generation of a gas and electricity meter. Energy suppliers install them across the country, but what’s the fuss all about?

Well, a smart meter is just that – smart! With gas and electric prices rising, having a smart meter installed can help make sure your bills are accurate.

They are able to…

  • Send automatic readings directly and securely to your energy supplier, which means no more having to read your meter, or receiving estimated bills;
  • Save you money on your bills, as you only pay for the energy you use;
  • Let you see how much energy you’re using and what it costs you. This can help you make daily changes to reduce the energy you use.

The best part? Smart meters are free! Your supplier may have made contact with you to offer an appointment to install one in your home. If not, contact your supplier directly to discuss how to get one installed in your home.

You can have them whether you pay by direct debit or payment card. In fact, a smart pre-payment meter means you can top up your meter without leaving the house. You simply use an online payment system.

If your gas and electric meters are currently in an awkward place (they’re too high up for you to reach, or in a low cupboard behind furniture) then a smart meter is a good idea as there will be no need to read your meters regularly to ensure your bills are accurate.
