Redevelopment of the former St Johns College in Rumney is now underway, with Encon Construction awarded the contract to start work on site in the Spring.
The project will transform the disused site into a vibrant new community, delivering 58 modern homes, including a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom houses as well as one- and two-bedroom apartments. Each home will benefit from solar panels and air source heat pumps, ensuring an EPC A energy rating and lower energy costs for future residents.
Improvements across the development will feature sustainable drainage measures including rain gardens, while a wildflower meadow will bring bees and beauty to enhance biodiversity and boost the ecological benefits of the site.
Encon Construction will also be working with our communities team over the coming months to identify local projects and initiatives that can be supported through the community benefit scheme, and to facilitate a partnership with local schools.
Andrea Hibbert, Head of Development at CCHA said:
“This site has been empty for over twenty years, so we’re looking forward to breathing new life into the area. This project marks a significant milestone in addressing housing need in Cardiff, and it’s exciting to see progress moving forward on the building of 58 much needed new homes, while also delivering on our commitment to sustainability.”
This development has been partly funded by the Welsh Government Social Housing Grant and is due to complete in Winter 2026.
