Green Squirrel is a non-profit based in Splott, and we aim to be a helping hand for anyone who wants to take action on the climate and nature crisis. We work with schools, communities and businesses to help people learn skills that reduce their impact on the planet – everything from fixing a bike or growing food to mending clothes and running your own campaigns to get your voice heard. We also work with local people to help make Cardiff a greener, fairer place to live – for the last two years we’ve been running Say No to the Mow, encouraging Cardiff council to manage grassy areas different to help wildlife and people, and throughout lockdown was shared over 8,500 free veg, herb and flowers plants with local resident to help people get growing.

We have two very exciting projects to get involved with right now – the first is called The Something Club, a supportive online community where you can develop the skills and confidence to make a real difference in the fight against climate change. This will launch in the autumn, and anyone signing up now can get a month’s membership free, but we’ll also offer free memberships to anyone who wouldn’t be able to make a monthly payment: we think it’s important that everyone who wants to take part, can.

Secondly, we’re preparing to start construction on the Railway Gardens project in Splott, a green community hub for learning, sharing, growing, and play. Local residents have been planning and fundraising for this since 2015, and so far we have raised over half a million pounds to bring the community’s vision of a shared space for everyone to life. If you would like to get involved or become a volunteer with the project please visit railwaygardens.co.uk
