The information circulating about rising energy costs have been a point of concern for many of us. However, there is support available through the Welsh Government’s Winter Fuel Support Scheme. This funding is part of a support package to assist with the recent rise in living costs.

What is the Winter Fuel Support Scheme?

This fund is available for low income households to meet higher energy bills during the Winter. It is usually a payment of £100 but, on 1st February 2022, it was announced that this support would be doubled to £200. This is available to new applicants, and retrospectively to households that have already applied.

Who is eligible?

The Winter Fuel Support Scheme is available for households where one member receives any of the following welfare benefits:

  • Income Support;
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance;
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance;
  • Universal Credit;
  • Working Tax Credits.

If you were claiming any of these benefits between 1st December 2021 and 31st January 2022, you may be eligible for the Winter Fuel Support Scheme funding. Please note that you must also be responsible for paying the energy bills for your home.

How to apply

To date, local councils have written to eligible households and invited them to make a claim to the scheme. However, you are also able to submit a Winter Fuel Support Scheme claim  via the Cardiff Council website. Please be aware that all applications must be received by 28 February 2022. Successful claims will be paid from January 2022 until 30 April 2022.
